Are Pharmaceutical Firms Slated to Follow the Big Three Auto Manufacturers?
HBS Club of Philadelphia's Resource Roundtable
On the heels of World War II, America’s auto manufacturers were the undisputed titans of industry. In the 1980s, Chevrolet proclaimed itself the “Heartbeat of America.” Today many would argue that the American auto industry is on life support. In comparison, America’s pharmaceutical firms have prospered for an extended period of time but the current decade’s outlook has made some question if drug firms are poised to follow the auto industry’s painful contraction. Healthcare reform, generic introductions and pipeline issues are just a handful of the major challenges. Finally, IMS is forecasting the global pharmaceutical growth rate at historically low levels for 2009-2010. Still, there are a handful of change-agent leaders who are striving to bring truly innovative ideas to turn around the industry’s fortunes.
